What were we yapping about a year ago [5/11/24]
British GQ makes a Sight and Sound poll for the gamers, Silksong is releasing soon I promise, and Zelda spawned unending discourse
Occasionally I will go on the Wayback Machine on the Internet Archive to be reminded of what people were talking about a year ago. Sometimes it puts into perspective things that seem very important right now are not actually worth the time and energy. It can also be a reminder of things forgotten, and maybe that they were forgotten for good reasons.
May 5 - 11, 2023:
- Redfall reviews were still rolling out. Ultimately the game would not be recommended by most reviews and this past week in 2024 we learned that its developer, Arkane Austin, would be closed alongside Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within, Hi-Fi Rush), Alpha Dog Games (Mighty Doom), and Roundhouse Studios (a continuation of Human Head Studios known for the original Prey), the latter of which will be absorbed by ZeniMax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online).
- We were still recovering from May 4th aka Star Wars day, another marketing tool much like March 10 for Mario Day in which we get to come together to celebrate a brand by doing free PR for its owner and spend money on marginally good deals on their products.
- British GQ attempted its own Sight and Sound greatest film poll by compiling the, “world's greatest game developers, streamers, directors, writers and more” into a top 100 greatest video games list. As with any “Top X” list, the results were controversial. Once again, the never ending comparisons between film and games show the gap between the two art forms. Compare the bottom of the video game list: Knights of the Old Republic or Fable II, to the bottom of the film list, Videodrome or Possession, and the artistry between the two is incomparable. Film has been around much longer and its shorter length means more can be produced and enjoyed comparatively, but sometimes you just watch a movie from fifty years ago and it blows away most games released in the past twelve months.
- Cyan Inc. was set to release Firmament in the immediate future.
- PixelOpus, developer of Concrete Genie and Entwined, was closed by owner Sony.
- Josh somehow predicted GOTY Balatro’s future glory when he got into playing poker for a hot minute.

- Darkest Dungeon II released its 1.0 update.
- We’ve been baited with Switch 2 for a very long time now.
- Private Division announced a partnership with GameFreak (Pokemon) for a new game. Whether that still exists now after Private Division suffered layoffs alongside Roll 7 (Rollerdrome, OlliOlli World) and Intercept Games (Kerbal Space Program 2) being closed down is unknown.
- Hey gang, just a quick update about Silksong. We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing. 🤡
- Sacred and Terrible Air, a novel written by Disco Elysium designer and writer Robert Kurvitz was released in English. I have a copy but have not yet read it…
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom released. I don’t have the space here to discuss all it does and did for the industry.
- Tenacious D - Video Games (Official Video)
- Asus ROG Ally reviews released.
